Alfonso Ugarte is vice president, North America, for the Pharmaceutical (Rx) products of Stiefel, a GSK company. In this role, Alfonso is directly responsible for all Rx commercial operations in the U.S. and has oversight responsibility over Canada and Puerto Rico.

Previously, Alfonso was senior vice president, Global Marketing for Stiefel Laboratories, Inc., where he lead the team responsible for global market understanding and forecasting, business intelligence, new product planning, global franchise management, global corporate branding, public relations, and global sales operations. Ugarte has 20 years of pharmaceutical marketing and sales experience at the country, regional, and global levels.

Prior to joining Stiefel Laboratories in 2006, Alfonso held several positions during his nine-year tenure at Merck & Co. Inc., including national commercial director for the Peru subsidiary in Lima; business unit director for Merck’s Colombia subsidiary in Bogota; and regional marketing head, ophthalmology, neurology and dermatology for Latin America at the company’s world headquarters in New Jersey.

In addition to his experience at Merck, Alfonso worked for Warner-Lambert Co., a manufacturer and marketer of pharmaceuticals, consumer health care products and confectionery, as product manager at the Parke-Davis subsidiary in Peru. After two years in this role, Alfonso relocated to the company’s world headquarters in New Jersey where he served as manager of Pharmaceutical Marketing for the Latin America/Asia sector.

Alfonso began his career in the pharmaceutical industry at Eli Lilly in Lima, Peru, where he was a pharmaceutical sales representative and, subsequently, a marketing associate.

Alfonso holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and a Global Executive MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He also has earned certificates in various executive courses from institutions such as The Wharton School of Business, The Thunderbird School for International Management and the Kellogg School of Management. Most recently, Alfonso completed the prestigious Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School.

He has been married to Maria Augusta since 1996 and, together, they raise Laura and Angela in Raleigh, North Carolina.
